Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL) formally opened its Corporate Office in Phuentsholing on 2 September 2026, marking another important milestone as the Company strengthens its institutional and operational capacity for project implementation.
Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director of Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) and Chairman of WHPL, graced the occasion.
The opening of the Corporate Office comes a day after the inaugural blast at the adit to the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project’s diversion tunnel, which marked the start of underground excavation and the Project’s transition into a major phase of construction.
The Corporate Office will serve as the central hub for managing and implementing the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. It will also support the development of subsequent hydropower projects envisioned under the 5,000 MW umbrella memorandum of understanding between DGPC and Adani Power Limited.
The occasion also included a traditional Khadar Ceremony for the newly appointed General Managers of WHPL. In keeping with Bhutanese tradition, Khadars were offered to convey congratulations, goodwill and wishes as they take on their new roles and responsibilities. Khadars were offered to the newly appointed General Managers of the Contracts and Procurement, Headrace Tunnel, Electro-Mechanical, Finance and Accounts, and Human Resources and Administration Divisions.
The appointments further strengthen WHPL’s management team at an important stage as the Company transitions from project development and preparatory activities to intensive construction and implementation. The General Managers will lead their respective areas while working together to deliver the Project safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to the required quality standards.
The Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project is being developed through a strategic joint venture between DGPC and Adani Power Limited, with equity participation of 51% and 49%, respectively. The successful implementation of Wangchhu will provide an important foundation for advancing subsequent hydropower projects envisioned under the 5,000 MW partnership.
The opening of the Corporate Office, together with strengthening the management team, positions WHPL for the next phase of project implementation and the responsibilities ahead.
WHPL congratulates the newly appointed General Managers and wishes them every success in their new roles and responsibilities.
