Plann Scheme and costing
The Wangchhu project, designed as a peaking run-of-river scheme, will be implemented on a Build, Own, Operate, Transfer (BOOT) model. With an estimated investment of INR 60 billion, construction is scheduled to commence in 2026 and be completed within five years.
Partnership with Adani Project
Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, MD of DGPC, said the partnership is a significant step in Bhutan’s journey towards expanding renewable energy capacity. “Hydropower cooperation with India has been the cornerstone of our relations since the 1960s. This project will enhance Bhutan’s energy security, help meet winter demand, and enable exports during summer, while strengthening grid connectivity with India.”
The Wangchhu project is the first initiative under the May 2025 MoU between DGPC and the Adani Group to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower in Bhutan. Discussions on future projects under this strategic partnership are ongoing.
